How Far is 30A From Destin?

Learn how far 30A is from Destin, including drive times to Rosemary Beach, Seaside, Grayton Beach, and Alys Beach, plus local advice on whether to stay in Destin or 30A.

One of the most common questions first-time Florida visitors ask is whether Destin and 30A are basically the same trip.

They’re not.

They’re close enough that people often fly into Destin and drive to 30A, but the actual vacation experience feels completely different. And because “30A” refers to multiple beach communities rather than one single town, the answer depends entirely on where you’re going.

If you’re heading to the western side of 30A near Dune Allen Beach or Blue Mountain Beach, you’re much closer to Destin than someone staying all the way east in Rosemary Beach or Alys Beach.

That’s where many visitors get confused.

They book a dinner reservation in one area without realizing they may be committing to a much longer drive than expected during peak season.

Actual Drive Times From Destin to 30A

Under normal traffic conditions, these are the drive times most visitors can expect.

Destin to Dune Allen Beach: about 25 to 35 minutes

Destin to Blue Mountain Beach: about 30 to 40 minutes

Destin to Grayton Beach: about 35 to 45 minutes

Destin to Seaside: about 40 to 50 minutes

Destin to WaterColor: about 40 to 50 minutes

Destin to Rosemary Beach: about 55 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes

Destin to Alys Beach: roughly 1 hour

These drive times can change significantly during spring break, summer weekends, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and fall break.

The Traffic Reality Nobody Warns You About

On paper, the drive between Destin and 30A may not sound bad.

In reality, traffic along US Highway 98 can get frustrating during peak vacation weeks.

A 40-minute drive can easily become an hour and a half if you’re trying to move between towns during peak beach hours.

This becomes especially noticeable when visitors stay in Destin but plan multiple dinners in Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach, or Seaside.

Locals typically try to avoid unnecessary back-and-forth driving during busy weekends.

Flying Into the Area

A lot of visitors assume they need to stay in Destin because they’re flying there.

That’s usually not true.

Most 30A visitors fly into:

Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport

or

Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport

If you’re staying on the east side of 30A near Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach, or Inlet Beach, many travelers actually prefer flying into Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport because it can be easier.

If you’re staying on the west side near Blue Mountain Beach or Santa Rosa Beach, Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport often makes more sense.

Should You Stay in Destin or 30A?

This is really what most people are trying to figure out.

Destin tends to work better if you want larger resorts, high-rise condos, bigger nightlife, easier boating access, and proximity to Crab Island.

30A works better if you want walkable beach towns, boutique shopping, bike rides, architecture, local restaurants, and a more laid-back atmosphere.

Families often love both, but the vibe is very different.

Destin feels bigger and busier.

30A feels more curated and neighborhood-driven.

Can You Visit Both in One Trip?

Absolutely.

Many people staying in 30A will book a boat day in Destin or spend time at Crab Island.

Visitors staying in Destin often spend a day shopping and dining in Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach, or Seaside.

Just avoid trying to bounce back and forth every day.

That’s when the drive starts feeling much longer than it looks on Google Maps.
