Everything you need to know about driving on the beach along Florida's Scenic Highway 30A.

If you're planning a trip to 30A, you may be wondering whether you can drive your vehicle directly onto the beach. The short answer is not at most beaches.

Unlike destinations such as Daytona Beach, the beaches along Scenic Highway 30A are primarily protected for pedestrians, wildlife, and the area's fragile dune system. While there are a couple of limited exceptions, most visitors should plan on parking at a public beach access and walking onto the beach.

Here's what you need to know.

Can You Drive on the Beach in 30A?

For most visitors, no.

Driving is not permitted on the vast majority of beaches along 30A. Nearly all public beach accesses are designed for pedestrians and cyclists only, helping preserve the area's natural beauty and protect sensitive coastal dunes.

Are There Any Exceptions?

Yes, but they're very limited.

Walton County allows beach driving in only two designated areas:

  • Grayton Beach
  • Phillips Inlet Access at the eastern end of Inlet Beach

However, these areas are not open for general public beach driving.

Grayton Beach

Grayton Beach is the only location where permitted beach driving is commonly used for recreation.

Beach driving here requires an annual Walton County beach driving permit, and access is limited to a designated stretch of beach.

Phillips Inlet Access

Located at the eastern end of Inlet Beach, Phillips Inlet Access allows permitted vehicle access primarily for launching boats and briefly accessing the shoreline.

There is no beach parking at this location, and it's not intended as a place to spend the day on the beach.

Can Visitors Get a Beach Driving Permit?

In most cases, no.

Walton County's annual beach driving permits are generally limited to eligible Walton County property owners, permanent residents, and certain registered voters through a lottery system, along with some grandfathered permit holders. They are not available to most vacation visitors.

If you're visiting 30A for a vacation, you should plan on using one of the many public beach access points instead.

How Do Most Visitors Access the Beach?

Fortunately, it's easy.

There are dozens of public beach access points located throughout 30A, ranging from large regional beach accesses with parking and restrooms to smaller neighborhood walkovers.

Many public beach accesses include:

  • Parking
  • Elevated boardwalks over the dunes
  • Outdoor showers
  • Restrooms
  • Seasonal lifeguards at select locations
  • Bike racks

Many visitors also choose to bike to the beach using the Timpoochee Trail, which connects much of Scenic Highway 30A.

Where Should You Park Instead?

Several regional beach accesses offer parking and convenient amenities.

Some of the most popular include:

  • Inlet Beach Regional Beach Access
  • Grayton Beach State Park
  • Blue Mountain Regional Beach Access
  • Ed Walline Regional Beach Access
  • Dune Allen Regional Beach Access

During spring break, summer, and holiday weekends, parking can fill early, so arriving before 9:00 a.m. is often your best option.

Why Doesn't 30A Allow Beach Driving?

The beaches along 30A are known for their natural beauty, protected dune systems, and important wildlife habitats, including nesting sea turtles.

Limiting vehicle access helps:

  • Protect fragile dunes
  • Improve pedestrian safety
  • Reduce beach erosion
  • Preserve sea turtle nesting habitat
  • Maintain the peaceful atmosphere that 30A is known for

These protections are one of the reasons 30A's beaches remain some of the most scenic along Florida's Emerald Coast.
